Purpose: To assess the value of 3D FIESTA (Fast Imaging Employing STeady-state Acquisition) MR sequence in imaging of herniated intervertebral disc disease.
Material and Methods : MR imagings of spine were obtained with both conventional (sagittal and axial FSE) and 3D FIESTA in 10 patients suspected of having herniated intervertebral disc disease. Axial, sagittal images were reformatted with 3D raw datas of FIESTA sequence. The findings of 3D FIESTA were compared with those of the conventional sequence in terms of detection and degree and differentiation, continuity with parent disc, compression on nerve root, secondary myelopathy, intramedullary lesion, other mass.
Results: In 10 cases, conventional FSE images and 3D FIESTA images demonstrate herniated intervertebral disc disease. 3D FIESTA images are inferior to the conventional FSE images in differentiation of herniated disc (n=1) and delineation of intramedullary lesion (n=1) In 7 cases, two sequence images demonstrates neural foraminal stenosis (n=7).
Conclusion: Additional 3D FIESTA sequence on routinely performed conventional FSE images is not neccessory in diagnosis of herniated intervertebral disc disease.
